GRACEFUL and
distinctive, a pair of these spiral
candlesticks will lend charm to any
mantle. Maple, or some other hard,
close-grained wood should be used. Each
stick is made up from four separate
turnings, held together by dowels.
Fig. 1 gives all necessary dimensions.
Stock for the body is cut to exact length
and turned to the taper indicated. The
spiral can be drawn by using two paper
strips, 1/2 in. wide. Each strip circles
the turning 2-1/2 times, as can be seen
in Fig. 2. The spiral can also be marked
by laying out 2-1/2 equal divisions, and
then proceeding in the usual manner for
this kind of work, as shown in Fig. 3.
The spirals are first roughed out on the
drill press, using a 1/2 in. drill, and
boring a little more than half way
through. Drilling a series of holes and
then drilling between holes gives the
turning the appearance shown in Fig. 5,
after which the spirals are finished with
coarse and then fine strips of emery
cloth. |

OPERATIONS in the cutting of
the spiral body are shown in these
photos. The work is first marked, using
either the paper strip or mechanical
method of laying out spirals. Holes are
drilled through the work to rough the
spirals to shape, Fig. 4, keeping about 1
in. clear at top and 1/2 in. clear at
bottom. Filing and sandpapering smooth
the spirals. after which the ends are
turned down to fit the base and drip
flange turnings. |
