SEWING TABLE
DUNCAN PHYFE ranks as the greatest American cabinet maker. His furniture designs are beautifully proportioned and of considerable delicacy, yet adequate in structural strength. This graceful little sewing table is typical. It is quite practical and can be used to advantage as a lamp table when not in use in its original role. Adherence to the style demands that only the finest grade of mahogany be used in the construction.
Start by making the stem. This can be post-blocked if a 3-1/4 in. square is not readily procurable. Make the three legs, shaping the top edge of each to the contour shown in the drawing. Fasten the legs to the stem with two dowels at each joint, after first sanding the butting surface of the leg to fit the stem. Make the box from six pieces cut to the size shown in the drawing. Saw the top and bottom edges with the saw table tilted 20 degrees, and bevel the sides on the jointer with the fence tilted as specified. After the box has been assembled. cut and fit

a small hexagon-shaped block into the small end. The glueing together of the box pieces is best done with the use of rope clamps which encircle the work. Small dowel pins will prevent side slipping.
The top is made in two pieces. The outer rim measures 18-3/4 in. diameter, and is best made up by glueing four quarter sections together. It is turned to shape on the outer end of the lathe spindle. Care should be exercised in turning the rim of the lid so that it will be an exact flush fit inside the top opening. The main top can be fitted to the box by dowels, locating these close to the box joints so that they will land on solid wood in the table top.
