2024 – 3 weeks – 200 miles to the Southeast.

This was our main outing for 2023.
We visited Wilmington, NC – Charleston, SC – Savannah and Atlanta, GA and Pigeon Forge / Knoxville, TN.

We camped at the Blakeslee AF Recreation Center campground on the military base in Wilmington. It was simple but nice paved site overlooking the water. Our campground review is in RV Life reviews. Walking the historic district of Wilmington was our favorite there.

Charleston and Savannah are both historic towns with many beautiful old Southern homes. We did walking tours in both but felt Savannah was the better of the two. Fort Sumpter was quite interesting.

Atlanta is diverse city. We stayed at the Stone Mountain Park Campground inside the park. I had seen Stone Mountain years before and was surprised at how horribly it has been allowed to deteriorate. A plaque said the state decided to NOT interfere with nature and let is progress naturally but the carving is so covered with weather stains and growth that it’s hard to see. We wanted to see the plantation but the mansions had a fire a few years back and was still not opened. We were truly disappointed in the activities all being shut down (most without notice) in the park.

We did enjoy hiking to the top of the mountain though.
A big surprise for us was the Jimmy Carter Library / Museum. A ‘must see’.
Underground Atlanta was a bit of a let down for us.

Pigeon Forge gave us reasonable access to drive the Cades Cove Loop in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The slow paced drive takes most of the day if you stop to see everything – including the wildlife.

We also discovered the Titanic Museum Attraction in Pigeon Forge. Another ‘must see’.
